Bio (Short)

With a rare combination of soulful vocals and a soaring trumpet sound, Paul St-Amand brings modern neo-soul, pop, and R&B vibes to the classic jazz tradition of singing horn players.

Bio (Longer)

With a rare combination of soulful vocals and a soaring trumpet sound, Paul St-Amand charts a unique course through Halifax, Nova Scotia’s vibrant music scene. He’s a double threat in the tradition of singing horn players like Louis Armstrong and Chet Baker, infusing performances with more contemporary neo-soul, pop, and R&B sounds.

Paul’s soul-jazz band The Joy Curve blends sultry R&B grooves with electrifying improvised jams. He also leads a combo (Paul St-Amand Trio/Quartet/Quintet) featuring some of the region’s finest jazz players. Paul has appeared frequently as a sideman and studio musician, recording or performing with The Stanfields, Charlie A’Court, The Town Heroes, Campbell & Johnston, Hillsburn, Aquakultre, Tommy Green Jr., Roxy & The Underground Soul Sound, and many more.

Paul was a 2017 Music Nova Scotia Award nominee for Jazz Recording of the Year as leader of a quintet called Blue Spirits, for the album Liquid Courage. He’s also a former member of the popular dance band Son Latino, and the ECMA-nominated funk group Unidentified Funk Object.

“St-Amand takes centre stage…with creative melodies that are both at once original and steeped in history.” (The East)

“Paul’s trumpet playing is just that good. It really is a special sound.” (East Coast Music Hour)

Liquid Courage is clear and taut, when it’s not gleefully cacophonous. This is a quartet with a sense of humour, which is nice.” (The Coast)
